When I think about portraits and their use, I always think of the mugshot (originally: police photo, later also used by the fashion and film industry) of the young Ava Gardner for MGM. A picture that captured her as she was in 1942 and gives us an insight into that time. Many are familiar with the police photos of grandparents in their youth that are present on social networks. The memories of that time are brought back to life through these pictures - and let's face it, who wouldn't like to have a picture of their grandfather looking cheekily into the camera with a case number in his hand?!
